Series 16 - Notes and Notebooks: English and French Collections
Oxford University Museum of Natural History

ProvenanceWestlake, Ernest (1855-1922)
Description

This series includes Ernest Westlake’s notes relating mostly to his English, but also to his French, geological researches carried out from the late nineteenth century until his journey to Tasmania in 1908. There are 24 bound notebooks and many loose pages of handwritten text (mostly in lead pencil) interspersed with diagrams, sketches and drawings of shells, fossils, geological cross-sections and landscapes. This Guide refers to those numbers allocated by Ernest Westlake to his notebooks.

Also included is a typed copy of the unpublished paper by J. Reid Moir on Ernest Westlake’s French Eolith collection. (An unpublished manuscript of this paper is held in: WEST00414, 'The Eoliths from the Upper Miocene deposits of the Cantal, Central France, By J. Reid Moir F.R.S', Series 12, Westlake Collection, Manuscript Collections, Pitt Rivers Museum.)

Further notes and cross references:

A handwritten manuscript of this paper is held in: [WEST00414, 'The Eoliths from the Upper Miocene deposits of the Cantal, Central France by J. Reid Moir', Series 12, Manuscript Collections Pitt Rivers Museum, Westlake Papers].

Donald Baden-Powell had this manuscript typed and sent to Aubrey Westlake: [images 75-78, WEST00356, Series 15, Letter to Aubrey Westlake from Donald Baden-Powell, 10 June 1955, Westlake Archive, Oxford University Museum of Natural History].

J. Reid Moir requested to Aubrey Westlake that Ernest Westlake's collection of eoliths be moved to the Museum of Natural History, Ethnology and Archaeology in Ipswich, where he was President, in 1937. Moir studied the collection closely and completed this manuscript in 1939: [images 81-131, WEST00355, 'Correspondence: French Collection 1923-1993 part 1', Series 15, Westlake Papes, Oxford University Museum of Natural History].

Accounts of J. Reid Moir's correspondence and his failed attempts to publish his manuscript are told in: [Rebe Taylor, 2004] and also in Brecknell, Stella,' A dubious inheritance: Ernest Westlake's 'eolith' collections', [WEST00349, Series 15, Westlake Archive, Oxford University Museum of Natural History].
