Series 7 - Photographs - Tasmanian Aboriginal People and Collecting Sites
Pitt Rivers Museum, University of Oxford

ProvenanceWestlake, Ernest (1855-1922)
Description

This series comprises photographic prints, most of which were collected by Ernest Westlake between 1908-1910. The original images all pre-date Westlake's time in Tasmania.

The three part numeric control numbers shown in the 'Control' field under each item in this series refer to the Pitt Rivers Museum Photograph Collections, and were assigned in 2008. Where box and folio control numbers are shown, these were assigned by Rebe Taylor in 2000, before items were moved into the Photograph Collections.

A special form of spear axe - Tasmanian Aborigines J. W. Beattie, Hobart, Photographer to the Government of Tasmania
Image >>

A mounted photograph of a white man's hand holding a stone implement and titled in handwritten ink: "A Special form of Spear Axe - Tasm. Aborigines" from the Hobart studio of J. W. Beattie.

Rebe Taylor remembers first seeing this photograph in 2000 in the same archive box as Edward Burnett Tylor's unpublished manuscript; most likely Box 5 of the Pitt Rivers Museum Manuscripts Collections, Tylor Papers. She requested a photographic copy of the print in about 2003 after which time it was possibly placed in the Westlake Papers.

This photograph was possibly sent to Edward Burnett Tylor by Joseph Paxton Moir during their correspondence from 1898 - 1906 [WEST00018, 'Correspondence to Edward Burnett Tylor: December 1898 - July 1900 (and a draft response)'; WEST00019 'Correspondence to Edward Burnett Tylor (and a draft response): October 1900 - May 1905'; and WEST00020, 'Correspondence to Edward Burnett Tylor (and some draft responses): July 1905 - August 1906', Series 2, Pitt Rivers Museum Manuscript Collections, Westlake Papers].

Further notes and cross references:

This photograph appeared in: Edward Burnett Tylor, 1900.

Ernest Westlake made a sketch of this photograph while taking notes from Tylor's 1900 paper: [image 7, WEST00326, 'Exercise Book 20', Series 4, Pitt Rivers Museum Manuscript Collections, Westlake Papers].

The hand in this photograph may be that of Joseph Paxton Moir; he discusses the uses hand-held Tasmanian Aboriginal axes (with sketches, some with hands holding them) in letters to Edward Burnett Tylor. He also sent Tylor examples of axes, and other stone implements. Moir hoped to demonstrate to Tylor that while unhafted, these axes were effective and, like other examples of Tasmanian Aboriginal stone culture, should not be judged too low in the scale of human cultural evolution. [Images 2-8, 13-15, WEST00019, letters to Edward Burnett Tylor from Joseph Paxton Moir, 27 October 1900 and 26 November 1900, 'Correspondence to Edward Burnett Tylor (and a draft response): October 1900 - May 1905', Series 2, Pitt Rivers Museum Manuscript Collections, Westlake Papers].
